Plains Art Museum invites middle and high school students to participate in the National Youth Summit on the Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness, a nationwide educational initiative organized by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in partnership with Smithsonian Affiliations.
Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this year's summit encourages young people to explore how Americans have pursued and expanded access to the ideals of life, liberty, and happiness throughout the nation's history—and what those ideals mean in their communities today.
The summit will feature interactive historical inquiries using objects from Smithsonian collections, youth-led conversations, and discussions exploring civics, leadership, and community engagement. Participants will have opportunities to connect with peers from different schools and grade levels, share perspectives, and engage in creative activities that encourage connection and civic participation.
A Summit Social will also be held Friday, October 23, from 4:00–6:00 PM, offering an additional opportunity for students to gather and connect ahead of the summit.
This free event is part of a national effort to engage young people in meaningful conversations about American history, community, and the future.
