Gala: "27th Plains Art Museum at the Spring Gala: 24: Sci-Fi Artistry" @ Plains Art Museum

Fargo, ND – On Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 7 pm – midnight, Plains Art Museum, its board of directors, and Presenting Sponsor Livewire invite you to the Museum’s 27th annual Spring Gala, 2024: Sci-Fi Artistry.

Spring Gala 2024: Sci-Fi Artistry will feature world-class event production by Livewire, hors d’oeuvres from Chef’s Table + Urban Foods, desserts from Nichole’s Fine Pastry and Café, and a wine tasting by 27-year sponsor, Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops. Guests will dance the night away to music from DJ Star IV and Post-Traumatic Funk Syndrome. The event will also feature sci-fi inspired art adventures courtesy of Fargo Pinball, Puzzled Escape Rooms, and Folkways. Gala attendees are encouraged to view the art galleries, which are always free and open to the public thanks in part to support generated on Spring Gala night, and guests are also encouraged to bid on high-quality art in a silent auction. All proceeds benefit Plains Art Museum, the only accredited art museum in North Dakota.

This year’s theme was inspired in part by a painting that Plains Art
Museum cares for in its permanent collection, Toward the Sun by John
Berkey. Berkey is a renowned sci-fi artist born in North Dakota. He created art for NASA, National Geographic, Star Wars, King Kong, Dune, Popular Mechanics, and many sci-fi books. Donations on Gala night help the Museum maintain the rigorous standards for accreditation, which gives the Museum the ability to showcase internationally recognized artists like Berkey for all the community to enjoy.

Poetry Sessions: "Poetry Therapy with Christine Ellsworth" @ Red Door Art Gallery

During select Thursdays over the summer, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm, we'll meet in the Gallery Classroom

poetry can help us move through it with grace and humor.

Christine Ellsworth is in her third year of poetry therapy faciliation training to become a certified CAPF

through the International Federation of Biblio-Poetry Therapy (ifbpt.org), and works with her mentor

Exhibition: "KATY J. OLSON: THE WEIGHT OF WOMAN" @ Kaddatz Galleries

On View in Kaddatz Building Community Room March 19 - April 27, 2024

Opening Reception: 5-7PM Thursday, March 21, 2024

About the Exhibition (in the words of Olson):
I will create plaster torso portraits of women constructed from plaster tape embellished with plastic. We are awash in plastic in every aspect of our lives. This project raises awareness that plastic is both a precious resource and a pervasive environmental pollutant. We are also becoming aware that it is inside us. This body of work highlights the complex relationships we have with plastic, the beauty of the human figure and how all women are objectified. These torso portraits will illustrate how women are taken for granted as producers of children, unpaid household laborers and as decorative objects. Each woman that is cast will have her own narrative fixed to the inside of the plaster cast. These narratives and portraits will explore the double bind that women face today; no matter who you are or what your shape or size; you are still criticized for who you are or what you look like. I want to create thought provoking pieces that highlight the environmental crisis, gender inequality and the hyper sexualization of women. I see connections between these separate issues, and I will use these pieces to explore these complex ideas.
