Join us for these arts learning experiences at the Cultural Center this Winter/Spring 2024! 

We are happy to once again partner with Elevate OTC to offer monthly Elevate Exploratories this season! We will also continue to host monthly arts learning workshops at various times during the week at the Cultural Center, in order to reach as many community members as possible.

This means 2 arts workshop opportunities each month this spring (PLUS, don’t forget our monthly Art for Lunch noon workshop each 2nd Thursday!)!

Add life to your drawings with color! In this class, students will learn fundamentals of drawing such as proportion, composition, value and more; and explore color theory as they incorporate color into the drawing process. Instructor and artist Paul Johnson will lead students through exercises and offer tips, techniques, and guidance as they create completed works of art using materials such as colored pencil and pastels. This class is for beginners and intermediate artists who want to learn foundational tools and further their understanding of color to take their drawings to the next level!

Paul Johnson, a resident of Pelican Rapids, taught for over 20 years as Communication Art and Design instructor at Alexandria Technical & Community College. He is the creator of Paul Johnson Design & Illustration, and is the Concordia Christmas Concert muralist, just completing his 15th mural.

You will need 450-500 yards of fingering weight/sock yarn. Preferably, a merino wool & nylon blend (like 80% wool/20% nylon or 85% wool/15% nylon). There is no cable hook required. I recommend Cascade Heritage Solid Color or Prints (https://www.yarn.com/products/cascade-yarns-heritage-prints) or (https://www.yarn.com/products/cascade-yarns-heritage-sock). It's not a required yarn. 

There are four small business yarn stores in the area, Potomac Beads in Alexandria, Tangles to Treasures in Fergus Falls, Prairie Fiber in Moorhead, Bountiful Ewe in Fargo. The yarn can also be bought at JoAnnes and Michael's but you need to check if it's wool/nylon. Acrylic doesn't have a good stretch to it. Yarn can also be bought online.

Kathleen will have a pattern. It's a free pattern on Ravelry and a good intro to lace knitting. The attached pattern also lists the needle sizes and the amount of yarn needed.​

Unleash your innate creativity! CornerStone is offering a unique and engaging experience for 6-8 participants this spring and also in a fall session. Taught by area creativity coach/artist/writer Dawn Duncan, Yellowbright, Inc., CornerStone of Creativity has been created to provide a soul-searching endeavor paired with various art activities, resulting in deeper understanding of self and natural gifts. Plus, it's FUN! Working alongside your classmates and with Dawn, tap into what is already inside of you: imagination, curiosity, and playfulness. Art is the channel for self-expression and personal growth!

This course is being offered to a maximum of 14 participants total (between spring and fall sessions) for over half off the regular course fee with funding provided in part by the Lake Regions Art Council through a Minnesota State Legislative appropriation and CornerStone Community & Youth Center.

Regular fee for the six-week course, which includes all supplies, and in-person instruction (2-2.5 hours/week) is $555. However, participants in this special offering will only pay $255, a savings of over 50%!

Have you ever felt the desire to write a story? Join University of MN Morris English Professor, Joshua Johnson, for a four-session creative writing workshop. This workshop is designed for aspiring writers who want to discover and strengthen their fiction writing skills. Participants will explore narrative tools and elements essential to creating compelling stories. From character development to narrative structure, attendees will gain practical experience and valuable insights to begin their own fiction writing projects. 

No prior experience is required—just bring your imagination!

This class will take place in Central Square’s Art Studio, Room 209 on the second floor. The class fee for all four sessions is $100.

At Central Square, we are dedicated to making sure everyone gets to participate. We strive to remove all barriers that could be in the way of a student participating.
