Norwegian Heritage Series - The Hopperstad Stave Churches

Tuesday, October 21
6:00pm - 7:30pm

Join us Tuesday evenings in October to learn about local Norwegian history, with Petra Gunderson-Leith. This week's presentation will be about Hopperstad Stave Churches, including a local replica.

Join us to learn about local Norwegian history with Archivist Petra Gunderson-Leith, from the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County. This installment will be about the Hopperstad Stave Churches. There were anywhere from 900 –1000 stave churches built in Norway from the end of the Viking Age to the mid-14th century. Today, there are just 28 stave churches still standing in Norway. One of these churches is the Hopperstad Stave Church, located in Vik in the Sognefjord. Thousands of miles from the Fjords of Norway, on the banks of the Red River, is a replica of the Hopperstad, built by Guy Paulson in the 1990s. Influenced by his Norwegian heritage, Paulson spent five and a half years carving, painting, and building this unique structure.
The presentation is open to all ages, and free-of-charge. Registration is not required.
