Rick Kagigebi (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) is a blanket maker whose appliquéd mural blankets are created as ceremonial gifts. Every aspect of his process—from sketching to fabric selection, sewing, and tying—carries deep storytelling significance.

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is pleased to announce its 2025 Annual Adult Regional Show Theme: “Art is a Lie That Makes Us Realize Truth.”

As has become the practice in recent years, Artistic Director Cheryl Bannes has tied the theme of this year’s Adult Regional Show to the annual Great American Think-Off topic. There will be a Reception honoring both regional artists and the Think-Off finalists on Friday, June 13, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. All are welcome at this free-to-attend community event.

What is truth—and how do we perceive it? In connection with this year’s Great American Think-Off question, “Is there only one truth, or are there many truths?”, this exhibit invites artists to explore the layered, often ambiguous concept of truth through their work.

Inspired by Picasso’s famous quote, this exhibition challenges artists to reflect on the lies, illusions, metaphors, and moments of clarity that shape how we understand reality. Truth may not be black and white—but a spectrum of experience, interpretation, and artistic expression.

All media are welcome—2D, 3D, traditional, contemporary, abstract, or representational. Let your art engage with truth in all its complexity.

Our 66th Midwestern theme is To Make a Prairie: Meditations on Ecology, Poetry, and Place. This theme is inspired by Emily Dickinson’s short poem "To make a prairie,” found below. This year’s Midwestern exhibition will engage with the prairie landscape, ecology, conservation, the spirit of a place, and, naturally, poetry and Emily Dickinson.

To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee,
One clover, and a bee.
And revery.
The revery alone will do,
If bees are few.
