Lecture: The Artist as Educator: Pedagogical Experiments in Contemporary Art

with Dr. Noni Brynjolson

In many recent examples of contemporary art, artists have taken on the role of educator: giving lectures, organizing workshops, sharing information, and providing readings, resources and sometimes entire libraries to audiences. Many of these artists experiment with forms of pedagogy in their work, in order to invite participation, build community, and explore subjects they care passionately about. In this talk, Dr. Noni Brynjolson explores the fundamental links between art and education that form the basis of these projects, and looks at several different pedagogical projects by contemporary artists, including Suzanne Lacy and Tania Bruguera, that are collaborative, community-based and oriented towards social change.

The evening will begin with a reception and refreshments with Dr. Brynjolson's lecture to follow at 6:30. Free and open to the public.

About the Lecturer:

Dr. Noni Brynjolson is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Her research focuses on contemporary socially engaged art, and she recently published a co-edited book titled Pedagogical Art in Activist and Curatorial Practices (Routledge, 2024). Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, she completed her PhD in Art History at the University of California San Diego in 2019 and lived in Indianapolis for five years before moving to Moorhead.
