Diapers. Laundry. Sleep deprivation. Daily tedium and moments of bliss. Months of isolation and instant bonds.
Cry It Out is a fresh, funny, insightful look at the extremes and absurdities of modern day parenting.
Neighbors from very different backgrounds are thrown together by a random shared circumstance: they are all new parents. But are the common trials of dirty diapers, spousal expectations, inconsistent medical advice, hovering grandparents, and looming professional obligations enough to actually build lasting friendships? Cry It Out examines the social norms and broad disparities parents experience in the US today.
Theatre B is an Ensemble company and many artistic decisions are shared. In the case of Cry It Out, everyone agreed it was important to bring together a cast and crew that had actual parents on the creative team. Although she is usually a performer, Theatre B Co-Founder and Resident Parent, Carrie Wintersteen, was inspired to direct Cry It Out. “I am the company mom,” says Wintersteen. “As a founder, that’s how you feel, like the company is your baby. My actual kids even call Theatre B their little brother, because they watched this venture grow up. Although we all joke that it may never move out.”
