The public is invited to the Charles Beck Gallery at Minnesota State Community and Technical College for a new exhibit by local artist Charles Christianson.
The exhibit, Charles Christianson Abstract Paintings 1982-2017, is on display through March 29, with an artist reception from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Christianson, a native of Fergus Falls, is a lifelong artist and creator who recalls selling his creations to his grandmother for a quarter when he was a child. He studied at what was then Fergus Falls Community College with renowned local artist Charles Beck, who was a major influence on his art.
He continued his studies at the University of Minnesota, Morris, and after graduation set up a painting studio and also worked construction. Christianson soon began creating abstract paintings with the same tools he used to tape drywall.
In his words, his paintings “originate from a mood developed out of relationships with things or people,” using textures and colors to carry the content and elicit an introspective emotional response.
Locally, his work is in the permanent collections of M State and the Kaddatz Gallery in Fergus Falls. He has had solo exhibitions in Fargo and has twice been awarded Lake Region Art Council/McKnight individual artist grants.
