The Pelican Rapids Multicultural Committee has reinvented the Friendship Festival. The event will include performances by 3 groups presenting music from different cultures in Pelican Rapids. The Somali Museum Dance Troupe has agreed to perform. It is a part of the Somali Culture Museum in the Twin Cities, the only museum in the world which focuses on preserving and presenting the Somali culture. Mariachi Jalisco de Minnesota, from the Twin Cities will perform Mexican music. Mariachi bands are known for playing concerts, weddings and Quinceañeras (sweet fifteen parties) and are an integral part of the Mexican culture. The Tickwood String Band, a local old time American music band which has performed in Minnesota and North Dakota for over ten years, will also perform.
Food vendors will bring a taste of variety to the afternoon with Mexican food, Bosnian baklava, Somali tea, BBQ, bison burgers and an old fashioned bake sale. Childrens events will include face painting, an oobleck walk, a bouncy house, an archeological dig, and fabric painting.
